ABAI CONVENTION - A COMPARISON OF TWO DATA COLLECTION AND GRAPHING SYSTEMS: PAPER AND PENCIL AND TEACHME

A Comparison of Two Data Collection and Graphing Systems: Paper and Pencil and Teach MeTM ERIN B. RICHARD (Alpine Learning Group), Bridget A. Taylor (Alpine Learning Group), Jaime DeQuinzio (Alpine Learning Group), Barry Katz (Operant Systems, Inc.) Abstract: Data collection and graphing are an essential, yet time consuming, component of programs using Applied Behavior Analysis. It would be beneficial to investigate options to decrease time spent completing paperwork in order to increase time available to staff for other tasks such as training and problem solving. This study used an alternating treatment design to compare the duration of time spent graphing data, analyzing those data, and planning for the next teaching session using traditional paper and pencil methods and the Teach MeTM.

Behavior Graph

Duration Recording Documents How Long A Student Engages In A Specified Behavior. This Type Of Data Collection Is Appropriate For Behaviors That Have A Distinct Beginning And Ending Or For Those That Occur At Very High Rates (E.G., Tantrumming, Being Out Of Seat, Not Completing A Task). To Collect Data On The Duration Of A Behavior:

  • Start The Stopwatch When The Behavior Begins.
  • Stop The Stopwatch When The Behavior Ends.
  • Automatically Records The Length Of Time The Behavior Occurred.
  • Repeat The Above Steps Until The End Of The Observation Period.
  • Automatically Calculates The Total Duration By Adding The Duration Of Each Episode During The Observation Period.

interval data

Interval Data

Interval Recording Documents Whether A Behavior Occurred During A Particular Period. There Are Two Types Of Interval Recording: Whole Interval (An Observer Indicates Whether The Behavior Occurred For The Entire Time Interval) And Partial Interval (An Observer Indicates Whether The Behavior Occurred At Any Point During The Time Interval). To Record Interval Data:

Divide The Observation Period Into Equal Intervals (Usually Between Five And Fifteen Seconds Long).

At The End Of Each Interval, Record Whether Or Not The Behavior Occurred. Note: For Whole Interval Recording, The Behavior Must Occur For The Entire Interval. For Partial Interval Recording, The Behavior Must Occur During Some Portion Of The Interval.

After The Session Is Over, It Automatically Counts The Number Of lIntervals During Which The Behavior Occurred.
